While the beaches of Okaloosa Island and Destin are some of the softest, whitest sand beaches in the world… sometimes you might want to take a break and find other fun to do with the family. One of the premiere sand bars in the US., Crab Island is very popular with locals and visitors alike. Crab Island is in the bay, so there is calm water and the level is always from knee to waist high. Super soft sand and plenty of vendors selling ice cream to T-shirts. You can use a boat to visit or there is a water taxi and plenty of tours to bring you over from the shore.
Destin is not called “The world’s luckiest fishing village” for nothing! The fishing is great year-round and waters are calm enough to take the young ones on their first trip out. You will have private charters and great party boats to choose from. There is also inshore fishing charters that take less time.
Destin has several tour options to visit with the dolphins while you are in the area. There is Sea Blaster which will give you an exhilarating ride to smooth riding double decked boats like Southern Star. There is mid-day and sunset cruises to choose from. This is a whole family favorite!
Spending the day on a pontoon boat on Choctawhatchee Bay is one of the real joys of life! You can visit Crab Island, beach on one of the many little islands to look for hermit crabs, find a spot to fish, snorkel, or just throw out lily pads or floats and soak up the sun. There are traditional pontoons and also some that have slides for rent (PLEASE check the water depth before sliding).
The calm Destin waters and low-profile buildings makes for a great place to parasail. The views from the top of the line are breathtaking. There are companies that operate in Destin and also on Okaloosa Island that are close to Waterscape and Destin West.
The Buccaneer Pirate Ship, sailing from Harbor Walk marina in Destin, is a great time for young children and adults! It is a great way to start kids off and get them out to sea because the large sail ship is very stable on the water. On the cruise there is hula hoop contests, pirate visits, face painting, and even buried treasure. Snacks and drinks are available on the boat to keep all kids happy. A must do for 4-9-year-old children.
